Start from what the property is actually doing
Before anything is drawn we look at the boring things: where water goes in a heavy rain, which side bakes in July, where you actually walk, and what the neighbours can see. Most yards that never work are fighting one of those four.
- Layout and planting plan for the whole property or one problem area
- Grading so water leaves the foundation instead of pooling against it
- Phased builds — patio this year, planting next, on one consistent plan
- We can also build from a plan you already have
Planting & mulching
Plants that survive a Zone 5 winter
Half of what gets sold at big-box garden centres in May is dead by the following March in this climate. We plant what holds up here, in the exposure it actually gets, at the spacing it will need in five years rather than the day it goes in.
- Shrubs, trees and perennials chosen for sun, shade and road salt
- Beds re-cut to a clean line and mulched at proper depth
- Garden rock, river stone and decorative edging
- Foundation beds, borders and full front-yard replanting

The unglamorous half
Drainage
Wet corners, soggy side yards, water against the foundation. We correct grade, install drainage where grade will not do it, and route it somewhere sensible.
Fencing
Perimeter privacy fencing, gated areas to keep kids and pets away from a pool, and gates that still close after a winter of frost heave.
Sod & repair
Fresh sod where seed will not establish in time, and repair of the strip the plow or the builder destroyed.

Do you charge for a design?
For most residential properties the layout is part of the quote. Large or multi-phase projects that need measured drawings are quoted separately, and that fee comes off the build if you go ahead with us.
Can you work from a plan my designer drew?
Yes, and we would rather you told us that up front. We will read it, flag anything that will not survive our winters, and price it as drawn.
When is the best time to plant?
Spring and early fall. Mid-summer planting works but needs far more water to establish, and anything put in after the ground starts to freeze is a gamble.
Do you remove the old material?
Yes. Sod, soil, old stone and plant material are hauled off as part of the job unless you want something kept.
